#150:Alien, Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Sci-Fi/Science-Fiction

Annee/Year: 1979

Format: Blu Ray

Alien. For my 150th review i got myself a little treat. The Alien box set was put out late last year and Costco had a really good deal for the 4 movie set. I indulged and shared the experience of the original film with my son. He did not appreciate as much as i did but that did not diminish my love for that movie.

Director Riddley Scott is definitely at the top of the list of best director for me. having brought us great movies such as: Blade Runner, Black Rain, White squall, Thelma & Louise, 1492, Gladiator, Black Hawk down, Kingdom of heaven and many more he has created a few of my top 10 movies of all time.

Alien is now 21 years old, WOW, and i clearly remember my first viewing in the theater as an adolescent. Since then, i owned it on VHS, DVD and now Blu Ray. The transition on Blu ray is without fault and is really a treat for the eyes. Definitely a good movie to test your plasma screen's black levels.

I will not bore you with the story as even my 12 years old son knew all the twists without having seen them before. This to me really shows how this movie has entered the collective unconscious we share. Cinematography is great, sets are perfect, HR Giger desing has not aged one bit since '79 and the special effects have help up relatively well. The actors were superb and this movie made us discover a very young Sigourney Weaver which has now played in som many movies. The musical score was perfectly dead on and the movie now seems shorter than before; perhaps I was more scared back then. The creature is still as scary as back then and that says a lot. Hail to Alien a true modern classic.

Great quotes:

Dallas: As most of you may know, we're not home yet. We're only halfway there. Mother's interrupted our journey for she's programed to do so unless things change. Things have changed. It seems that she has... intercepted a transmission of unknown origin. She got us up to check it out.
Ripley: A transmission? Out here in remote space?
Lambert: What kind of a transmission?
Dallas: Acoustical beacon. It, uh... repeats at intervals of 12 seconds.
Kane: S.O.S.?
Dallas: I don't know.
Ripley: Human?
Dallas: Unknown.
...
Dallas: [looks at a pen being dissolved by alien's body fluid] I haven't seen anything like that except, uh, molecular acid.
Brett: It must be using it for blood.
Parker: It's got a wonderful defense mechanism. You don't dare kill it.
...
Parker: It's a robot. Ash is a god damn robot.
...
Ripley: Ash, can you hear me? Ash?
Ash: [speaking in an electronic, distorted voice] Yes, I can hear you.
Ripley: What was your special order?
Ash: You read it. I thought it was clear.
Ripley: What was it?
Ash: Bring back life form. Priority One. All other priorities rescinded.
Parker: The damn company. What about our lives, you son of a bitch?
Ash: I repeat, all other priorities are rescinded.
Ripley: How do we kill it Ash? There's gotta be a way of killing it. How? How do we do it?
Ash: You can't.
Parker: That's bullshit.
Ash: You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? Perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility.
Lambert: You admire it.
Ash: I admire its purity. A survivor... unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality.
Parker: Look, I am... I've heard enough of this, and I'm asking you to pull the plug.
Ash: [Ripley goes to disconnect Ash, who interrupts] Last word.
Ripley: What?
Ash: I can't lie to you about your chances, but... you have my sympathies.
...
[last lines] Ripley: Final report of the commercial starship Nostromo, third officer reporting. The other members of the crew, Kane, Lambert, Parker, Brett, Ash and Captain Dallas, are dead. Cargo and ship destroyed. I should reach the frontier in about six weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off.
[to Jonesy the cat] Ripley: Come on, cat.
