Paranormal activity. This is a movie with a really interesting story. Made with a super slim budget
it was released directly to DVD without having any distributor. Once people saw the movie, it became viral and started spreading until it became a phenomenon. At that moment a bigger studio acquired the rights and started doing a proper distribution pulling the DVDs out of market. The movie became an big success in the theaters and until it was published on DVD/Blu Ray.
This movies success has helped to revitalize the genre in the last years and has proven once again that limited budgets does not mean 2nd rate movie.
The story is told in a format similar to Blair witch project with a hand held home camera. It tells the tale of a young couple struggling with the signs of demonic visits in their home. The signs become stronger as the story progresses until the hit ending. The actors and director are unknowns and this marks the beginning of successfull careers. Remember the name Oren Peli as he is director and writter of this film. By now the 2nd iteration (actually a prequel) of Paranormal Activity is in theatres already. This movie is so simple it is funny but yet retains all it's effectiveness. It may appear a bit slow at times, but the climax is well delivered. I admit having chills in the final scene which is more than i can say for many other movies of the genre. Gotta see for everyone, but you will remember this movie for a long time.
Imaginez un mélange de Poltergeist et de Blair witch project et vous vous approchez de Paranormal Activity. Ce film est un phénomène des dernières années et a redonne du sang neuf au genre au même titre que la décevante série Twilight. L'histoire ici est celle d'un jeune couple qui est visité à tous les jours par une entité démoniaque qui devient de plus en plus présente à mesure que l'histoire progresse. La fin est climatique et très réussie. Ce film vous hantera pendant plusieurs jours. À voir absolument.

Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir #112: Tora! Tora! Tora!

Tora! Tora! Tora! Most people are familiar with the war movie "Pearl Harbour" some love it for it's great special effects and others hate it for using this important storyline to get too personnal and become a love story. My opnion is that the most recent movie is quite entertaining and fun to watch. But that is not the topic today; we are here talking about the original movie on the same incident. Tora! X3 is a more serious movie from another era. The cinematography is great with lots of efforts of production for 1970. Yes the effects are more limited but there is no mistaking this as a great deployment movie. The soundtrack is excellent for the 70's and reminds me a lot of the Planet of the Apes first movie theme.
The story is following the historical facts and there is no main actor such as in "Pear Harbour". The heroes of the story are all the commanders and admirals who took part of this event. The movie is a bit harsh as it feels like a jury deliberation. It does give you a good felling about the events around this historical day while remaining highly entertaining. The movie is 40 years old this year but has aged relatively well and is still pleasant to watch. The cast is solid and the script as well. Gotta see for war movie buffs.

Phenomena. Also know as Creepers in the US. This is another movie in my study of Dario Argento the Italian very successfull Director. Phenomena is one of Argento's best film at least that is what he thought back in the 80's. It certainly is an interesting thriller with multiple twists. This movie was produced and cast in the US but shot in Switzerland. The story is of a young girl with extra senses who can "communicate" with animals and insect. She uses her power to track a serial killer who killed her room mate. There is a scene where she is suing a fly to track the bodies of the killer's victims. Very interesting.
The movie casts some great actors such as Jennifer Connely (Labyrinth, Blood diamond) and Donal Pleasence. The movie has great shots of the Swiss countryside and the story is very contrived a la Argento but oh so interesting. The finale is quite original with a monkey on a revenge... Interesting to note that the lovely Jennifer Connely was only 13 at the time the movie was shot and the shooting team had to go to great lenghts to make sure to protect their yound actress. But in one of the final scenes the chimpanzee used to shoot the scene ACTUALLY bit one of her fingers off...must have cost a lot of money in repair damages.
Anyway this is now a classic movie and will be interesting and very exciting for all.

Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir #110: The return of the living dead

The return of the living dead. NO this is not a George Romero zombie flick. Instead it is a competing zombie franchise (5 films to date). This film was directed by Dan O'bannon who has only two films to his credit but was invovled with other franchises such as Alien. This is one of the first horror movie to treat itself less seriously and to strongly incorporate comedy as a key ingredient.
The actors are interesting with key roles for Clu Gulager (played in most 50s,60s cowboy movies), James Karen and Don Calfa. A whole crew of young ones also play they first movie in this one. The movie is from 1985 and the Blu Ray treatment is clean although not spectacular. The special effets have definitely aged but this does not hurt the movie. The cars and dress of people really take you back to this period which is fun. The story: come on it's a zombioe movie... some stupid asses find drums filled with "army gas" which creates zombies. This animates some corpses which they get rid of by burning the body parts in a nearby crematorium. Turns out to be a bad idea cause the smoke mixes with some heavy rain and comes back in a local cemetary. I dont need to say anymore...
This contains it all: scares, gore, nudity, action, comedy, tension...everything a good zombie needs.
This makes it a classic.
The return of the living dead est un des premier film de zombies. Le film n'est pas de George Romero mais d'une franchise rivale dont ce film est le premier d'une série de 5 (a date). Définitivement un classique, car il introduit l'humour dans un style assez sérieux jusque-là. Le film est bien balancé et plaisant avec tous les éléments essentiels. À voir pour les amateurs.

Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir #109: Life of Brian

Life of Brian. When i found this movie at a discount on Blu Ray (6$) I could not resist. This was the perfect opporunity to replace my old VHS version and to introduce the young one to this older generation of British comedy. I was very curious at the quality of the transfer to Blu Ray and was pleasantly surprised. The transfer is no "Wizard of OZ" but it is quite fair.
The movie was direted by Terry Jones in 1979 which now sounds pretty far. This movie was never one of my preferate comedies of all time but it had good laughs. Surprisingly it has aged very well. I probably laughed more often than in the recent "year one" comedy. Slightly irreverentious Monty Pithon's team (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and last but not least Michael Palin) pick the timeframe of Jesus Christ from birth to death to recount this tale of "Brian" who is a man born at same time in same place as Jesus and who is mistaken for a messiah multiple times throughout his life. Really good laughs from all and my 12 year old really took on this type of comedy which really surprised me.(maybe not so much). If the Blu Ray experience means anything, it is certainly a good opportunity to recount these tales. Cant wait now to find the Holy grail and the Meaning of life.
Ce film du groupe bien connu de Monty Pithon (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones et Michael Palin) est très bien transféré sur Blu Ray. Je conseille à tous de voir la version anglaise si possible bien entendu. Ce film de 1979 a très bien vieilli et reste toujours frais et drôle. Monty Pithon nous raconte ici l'histoire d'un homme qui est ne et mort aux mêmes dates que Jesus Christ et qui a été pris pour un messie a plusieurs occasions pendant sa vie. Toukours aussi drôle et pour les plus jeunes si vous ne connaissez pas Monty Pithon foncez vous les procurer vous ne le regretterez pas. À voir pour tous.

Turistas. Also known under the name "paradise lost". This movie actually surprised me in two ways. I was expecting a gory slasher film for teens and waht i got was a more realistic thriller set in a real environment (Brasil) which is not fully based on gore and slash and with a pretty complete story line. The film is from director John Stockwell also knwon for "Into the blue" which was not unpleasant. The actors are little known but are well cast and their play is quite good. Obviously the story is about a group of teenagers who meet on trip to a remote area of Brazil. A some point they loose control and a amd doctor takes advantage of the situation to remove a few organs from them for helping Brazilian kids as payback for the American imperialism. Sounds ordinary but the movie is beautifully set and very well shot. The story keeps you interested and does not invest too much on the gorish aspect. Turistas. Also known under the name "paradise lost". This movie actually surprised me in two ways. I was expecting a gory slasher film for teens and waht i got was a more realistic thriller set in a real environment (Brasil) which is not fully based on gore and slash and with a pretty complete story line. The film is from director John Stockwell also knwon for "Into the blue" which was not unpleasant. The actors are little known but are well cast and their play is quite good. Obviously the story is about a group of teenagers who meet on trip to a remote area of Brazil. A some point they loose control and a amd doctor takes advantage of the situation to remove a few organs from them for helping Brazilian kids as payback for the American imperialism. Sounds ordinary but the movie is beautifully set and very well shot. The story keeps you interested and does not invest too much on the gorish aspect. Predators. Another film from director Nimrod Antal (Machete, Vacancy, Armored) this time produced by Robert Rodriguez. This is Nimrod's first Sci-Fi attempt. I guess we can qualify this a success. After being criticized by hardcore fans of The Predator original film for taking the franchise in other directions, the film studios decided to go back to the roots of the Predator success. This is all that this film is about. Very close to the original film in style and concept. The story is about a group of the meanest/best killers of mankind being abducted and dropped on an alien planet for a hunting session by a team of Predators. Obviously the fully armed mercenaries are the game...if they survive at getting along with one another. The movie is raw and the casting is excellent with Adrien Brody and Alice Braga playing the main duo. Note an interesting cameo by Laurence Fishburne. The FX are great the cinematography is excellent and the script is kept to a minimum as the action is the main plot line. A very entertaining movie and a positive move for the franchise. To be seen.

House of 1000 corpses. This is Rob Zombie's first film as director( and also writter). Dont know Rob? Come on he is a famous rock star who started making horror and violent movies mostly related to american white trash depiction. His characters are grimmy and rough but fascinating. Rob's shooting style is very different especially on this movie with lots of flashbacks and side steps "a la MTV" style.
His films are gory and dirty but always entertaining and with excellent high impact music which is well matched to the film. His imaginay is very sick which makes great films. You gotta like Rob.
This specific movie is about a groupd of 4 young adults making a stop at a remote highway attraction and making a side street turn to investigate a serial murder investigation. This turns out more difficult than they ever imaged. If you have seen the horror from the orginal Texas chain saw massacre you will recognize the vibe in this film; and it ani't pretty. But if you thought that finding your way in the middle of a hicks murderous crazy family was not enough just wai as the kids will get to find out about the legend of Doctor Satan himself...
I LOVE the richness of the images in this movie. If you are horror fans you have to see this movie as it contains som much material right from the start. Really great.
Rob Zombie le rocker bien connu a écrit et crée ce film comme sont premier opus. Et pour un premier film, c'est très riche en contenu et visuellement. Le style de Rob est particulier et très MTV avec des flash-back et des sauts de cote. Le fil lui est très gore, violent et avec une musique très bien adapte.
Un classique pour les vrais admirateurs du genre.

Star-Trek V: the final frontier. This Star-Trek movie, directed by William Shatner himself, was the fifth of the Star-Trek films but definitely not the best. It had a bit of the same bad taste as the first Star-Trek Movie: long voyage but deption at the end... The Blu Ray transfer is very good. The casting is grat but unfortunately the acting is not so great looking back. The story sucks in the end so the highlight is really the interaction and jokes amongst the characters. A bit sad. This story is about a vulcan who kidnaps three embassadors to get onboard the Enterprise and take control of it. His goal, travel to the elusive center of the universe to meet with God...ok... Well, what started with good intentions ends badly as god turns out to be more of a temper than he had planned. But if course all ends well cause it's Star-Trek.
Star-Trek V n'est pas le meilleur de la franchise. Sont point fort c'est la chimie et l'humour entre les anciens acteurs de la série originale. Le script n'est pas sa force et l'histoire n’est vraiment pas convaincante. Un vulcain émotionnel (?) enlève 3 ambassadeurs pour pouvoir prendre le contrôle de l'Enterprise et se rendre au milieu de l'univers ou il espère rencontrer Dieu...ou il finit déçu. J'ai de meilleurs souvenirs que cette dernière revue me laisse alors cela veut dire que le film ne vieillit pas très bien (ou sans doute est-ce tout l'univers Star-Trek 1ere Gen?). Enfin pour les admirateurs seulement.

Le script n'est pas sa force et l'histoire n’est vraiment pas convaincante. Un vulcain émotionnel (?) enlève 3 ambassadeurs pour pouvoir prendre le contrôle de l'Enterprise et se rendre au milieu de l'univers ou il espère rencontrer Dieu...ou il finit déçu. J'ai de meilleurs souvenirs que cette dernière revue me laisse alors cela veut dire que le film ne vieillit pas très bien (ou sans doute est-ce tout l'univers Star-Trek 1ere Gen?). Enfin pour les admirateurs seulement.

The midnight meat train. This is a film from star director Clive Barker (Hellraiser, Candyman,...) who wrote the original short story on which this is based. This is definitely NOT a movie for all. But if you like high sensations and GORE then this is probably your cup of tea. This is the story of a photographer(Bradley Cooper) who is seeking to get more raw images of the big apple in order to achieve success. This quest leads him to the underground train middle of the night. There he observes a strange man, the butcher (played by Vinnie Jones) who rides the last train at night to capture victims and pack them as meat for a destination which i shall not mention here (not to spoil).
This movie contains really gruesome gore scenes (eyes , teeth, mails removed from victims) and gallons of blood.
The casting is excellent and the story not too bad to watch unfold. The final conclusion may disappoing some but it is different. The cinematography and effects are quite good. The blu ray version adds some value here in terms of picture quality. The pleasant Leslie Bibb plays the photographer's wife's role and even Brooke Shields plays a minor role. Recommended to those who like high sensations only.

Son enquête le pousse beaucoup plus loin qu'il avait prévu et il découvre un énorme boucher qui tient un comptoir mobile dans le dernier train de la soirée ou il sert des carcasses humaines. Notre photographe va éventuellement découvrir à qui elles sont réservées. Pas pour les âmes sensibles.

Trauma. We continue our exploration of the the Italian director Dario Argento. I did not have a great experience viewing the movie Trauma. However now that i am getting ready to present it to you I review the synopsis of the movie and i have to admit it is quite an interesting one. Perhaps the way it is told is a bit twisted. But isn't that what we are looking for? Mixed feelings.
The story is about a sick yound lady who is anorexic, drugged and suicidal and ofa young man who falls in love with her. The girl is mixed to a sordid murder story after both her parents are murdered by a serial killler who's signature is decapitation with a portable wire saw. Yes a bit gruesome. The plot thickens and there is some doubt about how deeply the girl is involved in all this. The whole story is told from the boyfriends' point of view.
The murderer is in reality the young girl's mother who is really not dead and is acting revenge on the doctors and crew who by mistake decapited their baby as she was giving birth. The lady is rendered unstable by a series of electric shocks she is submitted to in order to make her forget the incident. Obvisouly this did not pay off.
Overall typical Argento plot and gore. Good cast (includes Argento's daughter, Asia, in lead role). Good cinematography again. But mixed results.

On fait face ici a une histoire tordue ou la mère de la fille (prétendue morte) est en réalité sur une mission de vengeance envers l'équipe de docteurs qui on tue par erreur sont bébé a la naissance en lui tranchant la tête. Elle perd vraiment la tête (sic.) après que l'équipe médicale lui fait subir une série de traitement électrochocs pour lui faire oublier l'événement. Ça ne semble pas avoir fonctionné comme ils voulaient cependant... Ce film est vraiment pour les grands admirateurs de Argento.

Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir #100: The Mist
YES 100 reviews already. This is really COOL. When i started this blog i had no idea how many movies i watched per month. This has really opened my eyes. Now i realize why my basement is cram packed with VHS, DVDs and Blu Rays. If you are a fan of this blog let me know as i dont get much feebdack from all this work. WOW 100 revues déja. Je réalise maintenant la quantité de films que je digère a chaque mois et pourquoi mon cinéma maison est si plein. Je n'ai pas beaucoup de retours de tous mes blogues post alors si ce blogue vous a fait découvrir au moins un bon film faites le moi savoir. The Mist. This movie passed me by in 2007 unnoticed. After seeing some positive reviews form my friends at Horreur-web i decided to take a shot at it. Was that ever a good move! Finally a Stephen King movie which was done right. Dont get me wrong there has been others but most the movie's first halfs are dazzling but the endings of the SK movies suck on film (not sure who's fault it is).
This is definitely not the case here. Frank Darabont directed the film and wrote the screenplay adaption of this early Stephen King's novel. Well the movie was played in the hands of people who loved and understood it correctly. Darabont has made many great movies (Shawshank redemption, green mile, mary Shelley's Frankeinstein, Nightmare on Elm street 3...) and this is definitely one of his best. We have here an excellent script, playing at multiple levels (as all good Stephen King do). The actors play is really excellent. The creatures from the mist are over the top cool. I started to watch this movie alone but by the end the whole family had joined me and wanted more.
The story starts on the day after a major storm; a small eastern US town is swallowed under a strange mist/fog in which very strange creatures lurk. I will not tell you more not to spoil anything. This movie was very refreshing and perfectly executed. The caharacters are very realistic and well played. The creatures really kick ass. WATCH IT! This is more about tension than horror as such.
Ne manquez pas ce film. J'avais passe a cote a sa sortie en 2007. Mais les gars d’Horreur-web m'ont convaincu de faire un retour là-dessus. Quelle découverte. J'adore quand je n'ai aucune attente ou idée du contenu du film et on me surprend positivement. SUPER. Ce film du célèbre Stephen King, est un des mieux adapte au grand écran. Ceci grace a Frank Darabont(Shawshank redemption, Green mile, Mary Shelley's Frankeinstein, Nightmare on Elm street 3...) qui a ecrit l'adapatation au cinema et a dirige le film d'un main convaincue. La production est superbe ainsi que les effets spéciaux. Mais le film tient plus du bon suspense de ce que vous verrez vraiment. Le jeu des acteurs est top niveau et le script est simplement parfait. La cadence du film est très bonne également. Faut voir même si vous n'êtes pas des invétérés du genre. Le script fonctionne a plusieurs niveaux également alors il y a aussi de la substance a ce mettre sous la dent.

Fast Track: no limits. This is a copy cat movie from the Fast and Furious mold. This is "life at full thottle" german version set in Berlin. Movie directed by Axel Sand who is not very well known for much else. If you are fully tatooed with F&F this will turn you on. Otherwise not so sure. The casting is average and the story is also very average. The scritpting is average but the acting is definitely poor. The cars are neat and the cinematography is OK. Yawn...it will fill a boring evening but dont expect to remember it in 10 years.
Ce film est intéressant pour les super fan de Rapides et dangereux, mais la qualité n'y est qu'à 50%. Peu de valeur de production, acteurs OK mais jeux d'acteurs à pleurer. Donc pas un mélange pour vous en souvenir dans 10 ans. Pour maniaques du genre seulement.

Lesbian vampire killers. At first i did not really pay attention to this british film. But after hearing some very divided reviews i decided to give it a shot. First of all this is a funny film; this movie does not take itself too seriously. Even the decors are funny and cheesy in some ways which rather pleased me. The movie features a bunch of Lesbian vampires which are played by really cute young girls which bring their share of naked boosoms which can be fun as well. Many good one liners had be laughing out loud. I have to admit i was having a good time until halfway through the movie where it starts falling flat on it's face. At that point, the cute girls dont cut it anymore, the laughs stop and the story isn't going anywhere and I also start falling asleep... Well can be worth your time if you like this genre but definitely not a classic.
Si vous aimez les film horreur qui ne se prennent pas au serieux a la Shawn of the dead vous serez servi. Mais le film ne retien pas votre attention jusqua la fin. La deuxieme moitie vous endormiras malheureusement. Tout cela malgre les joiles jeunes filles devetues et les bons textes utilises.

Hellraiser. This is another movie from Clive Barker the British Director. This movie was his debut and my memory of this movie was of the highest level of scare possible. This revisit of the first installment of this classic franchise was a disappointment. The movie takes way too long to get into the meat of the story. Yhe Blu Ray transfer is marginally better than the DVD is, i am sure.
The story is about a mature couple moving into a new house previously owned by a disappeared brother of the man. It turns out the brother in question was doing a journey in hell and managed to escape his demon captors. Unfortunately he needs the help of the wife to lure some helpless victim such that he drains their energy and comes back to full life. She will obviously pay hte ultimate price for having helped him and the curse is unleashed on the daughter which activates the Rubick's cube from hell. She is then pursued by the demaons (cenotaphs) and manages to escape by turning in her escaped uncle.
This movie unleashed a serious potential for more aggravation in the next installments of the franchise. The first movie is now after a few years definitely not the strong point in the franchise which memory serves as really scary and the stuff of nightmares.
Hellraiser est un film que la mémoire sert bien. Je m'en souvenais comme un film très intense et qui laisse des mémoires qui forment plusieurs cauchemars. La revue en est tout autre. Premièrement ce n'est pas aussi intense que mémoire nous rappelle et le film en tant que tel met plus d'une heure a vraiment décoller. Cette franchise a eu un succès et un potentiel énorme fut établi par ce premier film de la série. À revoir, mais baisser vos attentes s.v.p..

The card player. Continuing our exploration of the world of italian director Dario Argento this one is a more recent addition to his filmography. The movie is a modern take on the web based assasin who kills his victim by playing a gruesome video poker game with opponents on the web. Obviously he chooses cops to play with. The movie builds an interesting tension and remains a thriller more than a horror movie.
The cinematography is quite good and the casting is well done. Not a great film but still a good thriller which ages rapidly due to it's use of the net and video tech.
Ce film en est un autre de Dario Argento. PAs son meilleur mais un bon petit thriller quand meme. Il s'agit ici d'un tueur en serie qui nargue les force policieres en les forcant a jouer au video poker avec lui par le net. Lorsque les policers perdent la vicitme qui est devant une camera video se fait decouper un membre jusqua ce que mort s'en suive. PAs son meilleur film mais quand meme pas trop mal ficele.
