#157: Le dernier trappeur, Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Documentary/Documentaire

Annee/Year: 2004

Format: DVD

Le dernier trappeur a movie from director Nicolas Vanier (Loup , l'enfant des neiges) is a truly canadian movie. The movie is shot in the northwest territories and relates the story of one of the last men to spend their life in the wilderness; commuting truly with nature and living by trapping animals for their fur. A seriously beautiful movie, half way between a documentary and a story being told. The Canadian wilderness at it's best with breathtaking vistas, great cinematography and many wild animals in their habitats. The movie shows the struggle of man and nature for survival. Good for all ages and highly recommended.

#156: Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo bay , Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Comedy/Comedie

Annee/Year: 2008

Format: Blu Ray

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo bay. A comedy from directors and writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg who have only this series on their credit. Funny but the actors are definitely getting older and seeming out of place in this type of adolescent comedy. Yes worth a few good laugh but also a bit rude and laughing a lot about the drug scene. If you have nothing else to watch maybe entertaining.

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo bay.

Great quotes:

Big Bob: I'm Big Bob. You boys ready for your cockmeat sandwich?
Harold Lee: Uh, no.
Big Bob: Well you better get hungry real fast... because I've got a whole lotta sandwich waiting for you!
...
Harold Lee: After all the shit we've been through, I don't... I don't know if we can trust our government anymore.
George W. Bush: Trust the government? Heck, I'm in the government and I don't even trust it. You don't have to believe in your government to be a good American. You just have to believe in your country.
...
Kumar Patel: So you get high and you put other people who smoke weed in jail?
George W. Bush: DUH!
Kumar Patel: That's so hypocritical!
George W. Bush: Oh yeah? Well let me ask you something, Kumar, do you like giving hand jobs?
Kumar Patel: No sir.
George W. Bush: Do you like gettin' hand jobs?
Kumar Patel: [smirking] Heh, yeah.
George W. Bush: Yeah well, that makes you a fuckin' hypocriticizer too, so shut the fuck up! Now smoke my weed.
...
Ron Fox: [upon seeing Harold] What's up with the guy with the weird eyes? He handicapped or something?
Deputy Frye: We believe he's of Korean decent.
Ron Fox: My God. North Korea and Al Qaeda working together. This is bigger than I thought.
...
Kumar Patel: Look how cute this deer is, dude. Not like those asshole deer in New Jersey.
...
Harold Lee: Can you focus on the driving? Focus on the road. You've had dozens of shrooms, my friend.
Neil Patrick Harris: Uh, dude, I was able to perform an apendectomy at age 14. I think I can handle a couple of mushrooms.
Kumar Patel: Wasn't that just the TV show?
...
Kumar Patel: [to Vanessa] Look, I can't promise you the kind of lifestyle that Colton could. I can't promise you that I'll mature over night. But what I can promise you is... [crowd leans in to listen intently]
Kumar Patel: [after a long pause] Sorry, I smoked weed with the president and I totally forgot what I was going to say.

#155: Wes Craven's New Nightmare , Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Horror/Horreur

Annee/Year: 1994

Format: DVD

Wes Craven's New nightmare. Just 3 years after we all thought Freddy was gone for ever. The producers find another twist to bring him back. Was the goal only to make money on this well used franchise? Certainly, but it was not the only goal achieved as this is really an entertaining sequel.

This movie is not part of the timeline of the other 6 as this time Freddy comes to haunt the actors who played in his movies. Cool a meta movie... This was a great way for Craven to reset the environment differently and as director of this film cast some of his choices. This brings us Heather Langenkemp in the main role after she played in tow of the original Freddy movies. Robert Englund obviously returns as himself the actor and as Freddy the character. A very original way to revitalise an old franchise and create a great and exciting movie to continue in the same vein. Good work Wes.

Wes Craven's New nightmare.

Great quotes:
Heather Langenkamp: Every kid knows who Freddy is. He's like Santa Claus... or King Kong or...
...
[phone rings]
Heather Langenkamp: Hello?
Freddy Krueger: 1, 2... [Heather slams phone down, but answers ring again]
Freddy Krueger: FREDDY'S COMIN' FOR YOU.
...
Wes Craven: I think the only way to stop him is to make another movie. Now I swear to you I'll I'm gonna stay by this computer and keep writing until I finish the script, but... when the time comes, you're gonna have to make a choice.
Heather Langenkamp: Choice? What kind of choice?
Wes Craven: Whether or not you will be willing to play Nancy one last time.
...
Robert Shaye: How would you like to join us in the definitive Nightmare?
Heather Langenkamp: I thought you killed Freddy off.
Robert Shaye: Well, we did, but the fans, you know, the fans, God bless them, they're clamoring for more. I guess evil never dies, right?
...
John Saxon: What the hell is going on, Nancy?
Heather Langenkamp: Why are you calling me Nancy, John?
John Saxon: Why are you calling me John? Nancy, pull yourself together before you make yourself and that kid nuts.
Heather Langenkamp: John! Would you call Robert?
John Saxon: Robert?
Heather Langenkamp: Robert Englund. You know, the guy who plays Freddy.
John Saxon: Freddy who?
Heather Langenkamp: Freddy Krueger?
John Saxon: Nancy, Freddy's dead. Don't start losing it like your mother did. I love you, sweetheart. Don't forget that.
Heather Langenkamp: I love you, too... Daddy.

#154: Freddy's dead: the final nightmare, Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Horror/Horreur

Annee/Year: 1991

Format: DVD

Freddy's dead: final nightmare. Dead again you say. Well this is the final film in the original saga. Again they will kill off Freddy in a most original way. This time they use the fact that he had a daughter. Yes we see Freddy having a normal family life until he looses it and kills of his wife after she discovers some of her estra curricular activities.

Director Rachel Talalay does a good job here in her first of three feature films in her carreer (the other two being Tank girl and Ghost in the machine). She now makes much TV content. This first film is actually very well put together. By the 6th movie people are aware of the goods so one needs to be quite original to keep us entertained. And this film delivers with yet new ways to challenge our minds. Freddy has finally managed to kill all the kids from his hometown and he is now looking further to play his games. Robert Englund is still on top of his game as Freddy while Liza Zane does a good job at playing Freddy's daughter. Maggie her character does not know this information which she discovers half way through the movie. Freddy tries to take her on the dark side but she turns around and delivers him the final blow. This was a 3D movie in the theater and the movie carries some stupid moves obviously put in place to take advantage of 3D. One of the solid Freddy movies to close the long line.

Great quotes:
Title Card: "Do you know the terror of he who falls asleep? To the very toes he is terrified, because the ground gives way under him, And the dream begins... " - Friedrich Nietzsche
...
Maggie Burroughs: [looks at a poster] This is new.
Doc: You like it? These are ancient dream demons. Supposedly they roam the dreams of the living till they find the most evil, twisted human imaginable. Then they give him the power to cross the line and turn our nightmares into reality.
...
John Doe: I know why you let me go.
Freddy Krueger: Ohh. Do you think *I'm* your daddy? Mm-mm! Wrong!
[Freddy begins slicing at John's parachute line]
John Doe: But you let me live.
Freddy Krueger: Only long enough for to bring me back my daughter.
John Doe: Your daughter?
Freddy Krueger: [begins slicing away at other parachute line] And now, she's gonna take me to a whole new playground.
John Doe: No!
Freddy Krueger: [chops away at last line] Grounded!
...
Freddy Krueger: Time to start all over again.
Maggie Burroughs: But this isn't Springwood.
Freddy Krueger: [laughs] Every town has an Elm Street!
...
Freddy Krueger: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but nothing will ever kill me. Well, let's see now. First, they tried burning me. [slices off thumb]
Freddy Krueger: Then they tried burying me. [slices off index finger]
Freddy Krueger: But this... this is my favorite.
Freddy Krueger: [gives a finger gesture] They even tried holy water!
Freddy Krueger: [slices off middle finger, drops hand out of frame and holds it up again with all fingers intact] But I just keep on tickin'... because they promised me that.
Doc: They?
Freddy Krueger: The dream people. The ones that gave me this job. In dreams... I am forever! Too bad you're not.

#153: Return to House on Haunted Hill, Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Horror/Horreur

Annee/Year: 2007

Format: DVD

Return to house on Haunted Hill. This is the second part of the remake of this series. There are mixed feeligns about the remake so viewing it's sequel is definitely touchy ground. Victor Garcia, a newer director, attempted this task. Did he succed i would say yes and no.

I personnaly really like the atmosphere of the remake. The sequel is built around some solid new foundations and some new explanations are introduced to explain the mystery around the Haunted Hill mansion. This was a smart move and helps to set up the movie in a believable manner which was tough considering the end of the last film (why would anyone return to the location of such murders).

In this sencond movie, the only girl who managed to survive the last carnage, a few years earlier, is killed in her appartment through mysterious circumstances. It turns out she was doing studies (related to the Haunted Hill manor) on a pagan god statuette with evil powers. The movie rotates around three factions the sister (played by Amanda Righetti) and her boyfriend (played by Eric Palladino), the professor and his assistants ex-collegues of the dead sister and a third group of mercenary intent on finding the valuable statue at all cost.

The movie becomes a play between the three different groups who manage to all get stuck in the evil manor again... can they survie the whole night (hey deja vu?) From there it goes downhill as the movie is not half as scary or interesting as the first one.

Return to house on Haunted Hill.

Great quotes:

Desmond: Mansions with their own mental wards. Only in fucking L.A.
...

Paul:[reading the newspaper reports on Sara's wall] Isn't this the House where all those people died a few years ago?
Ariel Wolfe: Yeah, my sister was one of the few that made it out alive.
Paul: I remember, seeing it on the news. Steven Price flipped out, went on a killing spree.
Ariel Wolfe: Well that's not what happened according to my sister.
Paul: What do you mean?
Ariel Wolfe: Sara believed the house was haunted, that Ghosts killed Price's party guests.
...
Kyle: Pretty creepy, isn't it? You know, they say that the souls of the people that died here apparently still haunt the house.
Michelle: You know, they also say that people who believe in ghost should be on Prozac.
Kyle: I'm sorry, Michelle, I wasn't listening, I was looking at your breasts.

#152: The Social Network, Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Drame/Drama

Annee/Year: 2010

Format: Blu Ray

The Social Network. Probably one of the very significant movie of the year. Brought to us by director David Fincher who brought us also The curious case of Benjamin Button, The fight Club, Se7en and Alien 3. David has already made his mark before and he reiterates with a very solid film. At first i thought this would be a very light film to pat all the internet geeks on their backs; but this is a very tough movie, very dense (in the sense that it has a lot of fast paced dialog) and a multi layered film which can be analysed on several levels.

This is not a movie for the casual viewer. It will require you some work to understand it's full richness. The movie can be taken on the level of a class struggle based in harvard setting. It can also be taken as a criticism of the internet/computer generation and their lack of human touch.

The film employs an excellent cast: Jesse Eisenberg plays the role of Mark Zuckerberg (oscar contender?) thereal life storyof the kid who started facebook and became 10X billionaire. Andrew Garfield plays beautifully the role of his right hand man: Eduardo Saverin.

Justin Timberlake plays the role of the guy we like to hate: Sean Parker the founder of Napster.

Armie Hammer plays two roles...as the Winklevoss twins: the well to do aristocratic students who believed facebook was their brainchild and who sued Zuckerberg for 65M$.

The film shows us the life of Zuckerberg between his invention of Facebook until the two major lawsuits he suffered through to gain his freedom. One by the twins who were jealous of his success and the other to offload his best friend from joint ownership. The movie is quite dark in spirit as we get to know a kid with no sense of human interaction...funny he is the one creating the world's largest empire based on social sensibility. We see a kid torn between living life or living through his computer... torn between his aspirations and keeping his few true friends... torn between showing how good he is and scoring with chicks...wasting time for generating money to grow his company or appearing in court becomes all a waste of his time. A man living in a computer generated cocoon and an artificial work environment without any family or true friends around him. In many ways this movie is a cultural criticism. How much should one scarifice to become rich and famous?

Beautifully shot and expertly and very precisely built this movie is like looking inside a complex watch. The blu ray is excellent and even the packaging box is quite original. Another marking movie from David Fincher which will stay with you for many days after viewing and will take on more importance in time.

Great quotes:

Sean Parker: Drop the "the". Just "Facebook". It's cleaner.
...

Mark Zuckerberg: People wanna go online and check out their friends, so why not build a website that offers that. I'm talking about taking the entire social experience of college and putting it online.
...
Gage: Mr. Zuckerberg, do I have your full attention?
Mark Zuckerberg: [stares out the window] No.
Gage: Do you think I deserve it?
Mark Zuckerberg: [looks at the lawyer] What?
Gage: Do you think I deserve your full attention?
Mark Zuckerberg: I had to swear an oath before we began this deposition, and I don't want to perjure myself, so I have a legal obligation to say no.
Gage: Okay - no. You don't think I deserve your attention.
Mark Zuckerberg: I think if your clients want to sit on my shoulders and call themselves tall, they have the right to give it a try - but there's no requirement that I enjoy sitting here listening to people lie. You have part of my attention - you have the minimum amount. The rest of my attention is back at the offices of Facebook, where my colleagues and I are doing things that no one in this room, including and especially your clients, are intellectually or creatively capable of doing. [pauses]
Mark Zuckerberg: Did I adequately answer your condescending question?
...
Erica Albright: You are probably going to be a very successful computer person. But you're going to go through life thinking that girls don't like you because you're a nerd. And I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that that won't be true. It'll be because you're an asshole.
...
Sean Parker: You know what's cooler than a million dollars?
Eduardo Saverin: You?
Sean Parker: A billion dollars.
...
Mark Zuckerberg: Your actions could have permanently destroyed everything I've been working on! Eduardo Saverin: *We* have been working on!
...
Marylin Delpy: What are you doing?
Mark Zuckerberg: Checking in to see how it's going in Bosnia.
Marylin Delpy: Bosnia. They don't have roads, but they have Facebook. [Mark says nothing] Marylin Delpy: You must really hate the Winklevosses.
Mark Zuckerberg: I don't hate anybody. The "Winklevii" aren't suing me for intellectual property theft. They're suing me because for the first time in their lives, things didn't go exactly the way they were supposed to for them.
...
Mark Zuckerberg: Your date looks so familiar to me.
Sean Parker: She looks familiar to a lot of people.
Mark Zuckerberg: What do you mean?
Sean Parker: A Stanford MBA named Roy Raymond wants to buy his wife some lingerie but he's too embarrassed to shop for it at a department store. He comes up with an idea for a high end place that doesn't make you feel like a pervert. He gets a $40,000 bank loan, borrows another $40,000 from his in-laws, opens a store, and calls it Victoria's Secret. Makes a half million dollars his first year. He starts a catalog, opens three more stores and after five years he sells the company to Leslie Wexner and the Limited for four million dollars. Happy ending, right? Except two years later, the company's worth 500 million dollars and Roy Raymond jumps off the Golden Gate Bridge. Poor guy just wanted to buy his wife a pair of thigh highs.

#151: Start Trek VI The undiscovered country, Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Sci-Fi/Science-Fiction

Annee/Year: 1991

Format: Blu-Ray

Star Trek VI remains as one of the best Start Trek movie with the original crew. This movie takes setting on how two countries/worlds approach peace when they have been fighting war for so long. In an environment where trust is non-existent and peace supporters are few and get thrown off my the parties who have nothing to gain from peace. This takes a meaning that transcends the normal Star-Trek premises. Under the direction of Nicholas Meyer (who also directer Star Trek II) the movie brings us the failiar captain Kirk, as one of the major fighters against the Klingons; he is put in a situation where he needs to defend the peace process between the fedaration and the Klingons. With a beautiful cinematography and solid special effects this movie will remain with The Wraft of Khan as the best from the Star-Trek franchise stories; at least with the first generation crew. What a team the Kirk, Spoc, Scotty, Bones, Sulu make. Almost as good as the team of Shatner, Nemoy, Kelley, Doohan, Takei & Nichols. The disc (blu-ray version at least) includes a beautiful tribute to DeForest Kelley who passed away in 1999. Special note for Christopher Plummer as Klingon admiral Chang. If you ever watch just one movie from this franchise this should be the one.

Great quotes:
[Dictating his personal log] Captain James T. Kirk: Captain's log, stardate 9522.6: I've never trusted Klingons, and I never will. I could never forgive them for the death of my boy. It seems to me our mission to escort the Chancellor of the Klingon High Council to a peace summit is problematic at best. Spock says this could be an historic occasion, and I'd like to believe him, but how on earth can history get past people like me?
...
Captain James T. Kirk: Bones, are you afraid of the future?
Commander Leonard 'Bones' McCoy, M.D.: I believe that was the general idea that I was trying to convey.
Captain James T. Kirk: I don't mean this future.
Commander Leonard 'Bones' McCoy, M.D.: What is this, multiple choice?
...

Chancellor Gorkon: You don't trust me, do you? I don't blame you. If there is to be a brave new world, our generation is going to have the hardest time living in it.
...
Captain Spock: There is an old Vulcan proverb: only Nixon could go to China.

#150:Alien, Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Sci-Fi/Science-Fiction

Annee/Year: 1979

Format: Blu Ray

Alien. For my 150th review i got myself a little treat. The Alien box set was put out late last year and Costco had a really good deal for the 4 movie set. I indulged and shared the experience of the original film with my son. He did not appreciate as much as i did but that did not diminish my love for that movie.

Director Riddley Scott is definitely at the top of the list of best director for me. having brought us great movies such as: Blade Runner, Black Rain, White squall, Thelma & Louise, 1492, Gladiator, Black Hawk down, Kingdom of heaven and many more he has created a few of my top 10 movies of all time.

Alien is now 21 years old, WOW, and i clearly remember my first viewing in the theater as an adolescent. Since then, i owned it on VHS, DVD and now Blu Ray. The transition on Blu ray is without fault and is really a treat for the eyes. Definitely a good movie to test your plasma screen's black levels.

I will not bore you with the story as even my 12 years old son knew all the twists without having seen them before. This to me really shows how this movie has entered the collective unconscious we share. Cinematography is great, sets are perfect, HR Giger desing has not aged one bit since '79 and the special effects have help up relatively well. The actors were superb and this movie made us discover a very young Sigourney Weaver which has now played in som many movies. The musical score was perfectly dead on and the movie now seems shorter than before; perhaps I was more scared back then. The creature is still as scary as back then and that says a lot. Hail to Alien a true modern classic.

Great quotes:

Dallas: As most of you may know, we're not home yet. We're only halfway there. Mother's interrupted our journey for she's programed to do so unless things change. Things have changed. It seems that she has... intercepted a transmission of unknown origin. She got us up to check it out.
Ripley: A transmission? Out here in remote space?
Lambert: What kind of a transmission?
Dallas: Acoustical beacon. It, uh... repeats at intervals of 12 seconds.
Kane: S.O.S.?
Dallas: I don't know.
Ripley: Human?
Dallas: Unknown.
...
Dallas: [looks at a pen being dissolved by alien's body fluid] I haven't seen anything like that except, uh, molecular acid.
Brett: It must be using it for blood.
Parker: It's got a wonderful defense mechanism. You don't dare kill it.
...
Parker: It's a robot. Ash is a god damn robot.
...
Ripley: Ash, can you hear me? Ash?
Ash: [speaking in an electronic, distorted voice] Yes, I can hear you.
Ripley: What was your special order?
Ash: You read it. I thought it was clear.
Ripley: What was it?
Ash: Bring back life form. Priority One. All other priorities rescinded.
Parker: The damn company. What about our lives, you son of a bitch?
Ash: I repeat, all other priorities are rescinded.
Ripley: How do we kill it Ash? There's gotta be a way of killing it. How? How do we do it?
Ash: You can't.
Parker: That's bullshit.
Ash: You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? Perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility.
Lambert: You admire it.
Ash: I admire its purity. A survivor... unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality.
Parker: Look, I am... I've heard enough of this, and I'm asking you to pull the plug.
Ash: [Ripley goes to disconnect Ash, who interrupts] Last word.
Ripley: What?
Ash: I can't lie to you about your chances, but... you have my sympathies.
...
[last lines] Ripley: Final report of the commercial starship Nostromo, third officer reporting. The other members of the crew, Kane, Lambert, Parker, Brett, Ash and Captain Dallas, are dead. Cargo and ship destroyed. I should reach the frontier in about six weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off.
[to Jonesy the cat] Ripley: Come on, cat.

Genre: Historical Drama/Drame historique

Annee/Year: 2009

Format: Blu Ray

Valhalla rising. A beautiful very controversial film for Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn who brought us: Pusher trilogy, Bleeder, Fear X and Bronson. This film will polarize viewers very clearly. 95% of people wont get it or wont bother to and will be highly frustrated by this movie.

The film tells us the story of "One eye", played by Mads Mikkelsen (who played the vilain in casino Royale) a first rate killer/warrior who has been enslaved by a Scottish tribe chief to accomplish sports/betting fighting. The movie os told in 6 parts and recounts "one eye" gaining his freedom and joining a christian Viking group who aim to free the holy lands from pagans. On their way they get lost in a fog for days and almost starve and dehydrate to death on the sea. Eventually they reach the shores of an unknown country which turns out to be deadly and the soil from which "one eye" was originating but long forgot. This is a deadly journey indeed. As he faces his destiny.

The movie is beautifully shot with excellent cinematography. The sets are minimal and the action occurs outdoors all the time. The dialog is minimal as the hero is mute... This will kill the movie for most. The pace is slow except for a few fighting scenes. Dialog and music are kept at a minimum.
This is NOT a very entertaining movie so many will dislike it. It does have a well built atmosphere though and is a very artistic piece of work. This makes this movie hard to categorize as it stands pretty much in it's own genre. If you are not willing to invest in a work of art dont watch it, you will be disappointed.

Soyez averti!

#148:Grace, Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Horror/Horreur

Annee/Year: 2009

Format: DVD

Grace is a movie about the mother and young baby relationship. The movie explores some questions about the mother/child relation at birth, the reaction of a mother when she has a stillborn baby, and how far a mother will go to save her new born baby? A dark and disturbing situation if there is one.
Director Paul Solet in his first feature length movie was helped by Adam Green which you will know from this blog(review #141) in putting together this fascinating movie which is truly scary. Jordan Ladd (cabin fever, hostel 2, Death proof,..) plays with excellence the role of a mother under the shock of the loss of her husband (Stephen Park) in a car accidents only days from delivering their first baby. The baby is declared dead in her woumb and she decides to deliver it naturally with the help of her midwife played by Samantha Ferris (Supernatural, and some tv shows). Solet has found how to use the unconcious fears of all mothers.

Upon giving birth she insists on keeping the baby in her arms and it miraculously comes back to life. For a woman in a shock from the accident having taken her husband this makes her completely vulnerable. After confirming the baby is completly normal she takes it home as she hates hospitals and decides to take care of it on her own. But once alone at home things start to become stransger as the baby starts refusing his mother's milk and having a taste for blood instead. The situation gets worst from there...

A fascinating film with a truly original story making us explore grey zones not often treated in movies. There is not much supernatural in this movie as it is quite realistic in it's treatment which makes it so powerful as it soils the beautiful image of the clean baby so aseptic in our culture. This movie can disturb many viewers so please refrain viewing if you are pregnant, young or too sensitive. But quite an interesting movie for the amateur of horror flicks with taste with more content than the usual slasher.

#147:Hot tub time machine, Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Comedy/Comedie

Annee/Year: 2010

Format: Blu Ray

Hot tub time machine. This is another solid comedy from the driector Steve Pink (High Fidelity, Grosse point blank). From his other movies you will quickly notice that he is always casting John Cussack in his main roles. Like myself i guess he loves Cussack's acting. In this comedy, we find Cussack along with his two best friends (Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson) and his nephew (Clark Duke) are thrown back in time to 1986 as they spend a night in a hotel's "special" hot tub. Once there they are faced with the possibility to rebuild their lives differently. Will destiny force them to walk in the same steps? This is quite an entertaining movie; not as funny as the hangover but loads of fun. But not for the whole family.

#146:30 days of night: dark days, Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Horror/Horreur

Annee/Year: 2010

Format: Blu Ray

30 days of night: dark days. This movie is a sequel to the movie of the same name (almost). The director Ben Ketai also realized this movie and it is his second movie to date. many people gave a low rating to this movie but i think it is pretty solid. Not as fresh as the original (which was staged in Alaska) but with quite a believable setting. I especially like the psychology of the main character and how it is used in the movie. Definitely fighting off vampires and being the only survivor of a whole town would mess you up. This is used well in this sequel. The vampires are also pretty cool and nasty, nothing like them Twilight crap vampires... main role is played by Kiele Sanchez who plays a solid role here. Quite entertaining for the amateurs of the genre but make sure to see the first movie before.

30 days of night: dark days.

#145: A few good men, Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Drama/Drame

Annee/Year: 1992

Format: Blu Ray

A few good men. Some directors are good in one genre others can excel in multiple genres. This is the case of Rob Reiner who directed many movies in the 80's and 90's. Rob brought us This is spinal tap, Stand by me, Misery, When Harry met Sally, Ghost of Missisipi amongst others. But A few good men will stay as one of the gems that Reiner brought us. This movie starts with a stellar cast: Tom Cruise (as the main character who is a lawyer), Jack Nicholson (as Colonel Jessep), Demi Moore (Lt Galloway Defense lawyer), Kevin Bacon (as Capt Ross prosecutor attorney), Kiefer Sutherland (Lt Kendrick), also casting Kevin Pollack, Cuba Gooding jr, Noah Wyle, JT Walsh and more. What a crew. They had me after Nicholson came on board. One of his good roles which he really plays right.

The story of this movie is about two marines who accidentaly kill one of their fellow when they are asked to do a code red on him. This sad event is thought to be standard fare in the marines in order to keep man in line; but officially the practice is discouraged by the core. Nicholson plays the Colonel hard ass who runs the tough base of Guantanamo bay and runs his ship as the frontline before the battle. He actually ordered his subordinates to do the code red on the murdered kid in order to teach him and make him walk staright. Cruise and Moore play the roles of the hot head young attorney and the chick lawyer who lives by the book. Together they try to find a way to win this and get the two marines who really believe they did what was asked of them. The tension in the movie builds and builds and you really feel like you get into the psychology of the characters. Beautiful. A movie to be seen by the younger ones and to be viewed agin if you have seen it a long time ago. The Blu ray transfer is a good occasion to revisit this experience. Although not a perfect transfer as some seen lately; it is a fairly clean version which makes it a good experience. Definitely a classic on the long run.

Rob nous a donne: This is spinal tap, Stand by me, Misery, When Harry met Sally, Ghost of Missisipi et plus.

Great quotes:
Col. Jessep: I run my unit how I run my unit. You want to investigate me, roll the dice and take your chances. I eat breakfast 300 yards from 4000 Cubans who are trained to kill me, so don't think for one second that you can come down here, flash your badge, and make me nervous.
...
Col. Jessep: You see Danny, I can deal with the bullets, and the bombs, and the blood. I don't want money, and I don't want medals. What I do want is for you to stand there in that faggoty white uniform and with your Harvard mouth extend me some fucking courtesy. You gotta ask me nicely.
Kaffee: You and Dawson, you both live in the same dreamworld. It doesn't matter what I believe. It only matters what I can prove! So please, don't tell me what I know, or don't know; I know the LAW.
Galloway: You know nothing about the law. You're a used-car salesman, Daniel. You're an ambulance chaser with a rank. You're nothing. Live with that.
...
Col. Jessep: Do you have any more questions for me, Counselor?
Judge Randolph: Lt. Kaffee? [pause]
Judge Randolph: Lieutenant, do you have anything further for this witness? [Jessep defiantly gets up to leave the courtroom]
Col. Jessep: Thanks, Danny. I love Washington.
Kaffee: Excuse me. I didn't dismiss you.
Col. Jessep: I beg your pardon?
Kaffee: I'm not finished with my examination. Sit down.
Col. Jessep: Colonel!
Kaffee: What's that?
Col. Jessep: I would appreciate it if he would address me as Colonel or Sir. I believe I've earned it.
Judge Randolph: Defense counsel will address the witness as Colonel or Sir.
Col. Jessep: [to Judge] I don't know what the hell kind of unit you're running here.
Judge Randolph: And the witness will address this court as Judge or Your Honor. I'm quite certain I've earned it. Take your seat, Colonel.
...
Kaffee: I want the truth!
Col. Jessep: [shouts] You can't handle the truth!

Piché: entre ciel et terre. This is a Quebec movie of the highest quality. A really good story told by excellent cast. This story will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end and to boot it is based on a true hero story from Quebec. This is a harsh, realistic look at the real man behind the hero label. A truly engaging adn well told story. A must for all. There is an english version on the Blu ray if you cannot understand french; but i cannot vouch for the translation quality as i did not sample it.

#143: Scott Pilgrim vs. the world, Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir

Genre: Comedy/Comedie

Annee/Year: 2010

Format: Blu Ray

Scott Pilgrim vs. the world. Let us start 2011 with a bang. This movie from from director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the dead, Hot fuzz..) who is bringing us another success with Scott Pilgrim. This is a movie based on a comic book series which relates the adventures of a young man from Toronto who is a definite geek and is looking to score a new girlfriend. Scott is also in a cool but just starting band (playing base) this makes the whole movie based around some cool music. Since the film is based on a graphic novel series there are many comic book references as well as special effects through the movie (reminding us a bit of the old Batman of the '60s). The movie is also full of references and sounds/music from the video game world (Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy). Overall it is using lot's of geek culture material throughout the whole movie.

Even the actors are fully geeked with Michael Cera (Superbad, Juno, year One) in the role of Scott. Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays the role of the fantasy girlfriend for which Scott must fight. Pilgrim needs to defeat her 7 ex evil boyfriends to her heart away...This is done through various music duels or actual symbolic fights which are quite cool. Other cast members to note: Ellen Wong in her first big screen role as Knives Chau the young high school girlfriend and many other cast members are well chosen and played.

Definitely a family fun very entertaining movie targeted at the younger geek crowd. The movie may loose a few levels of meaning when watched by non geeks but should still be way fun.

Great quotes:

Scott Pilgrim: We are Sex Bob-Omb and we are here to make you think about death and get sad and stuff.
...
Kim Pine: [unenthusiastically] We are Sex Bob-omb. We are here to sell out and make money and stuff.
...
[from trailer] Kim Pine: That... was *epic.*
...
Stacey Pilgrim: You should break up with your fake highschool girlfriend!
Scott Pilgrim: Wait who told you?
Stacey Pilgrim: Wallace.
Scott Pilgrim: He's not even conscious!
...
Scott Pilgrim: When I'm around you, I kind of feel like I'm on drugs. Not that I do drugs. Unless you do drugs, in which case I do them all the time. All of them.
...
Scott Pilgrim: You once were a ve-gone, but now you will begone.
Todd Ingram: Ve-gone?
...
Hipster Bouncer: What's the password?
Scott Pilgrim: Uh... whatever... Hipster Bouncer: Cool...
...
Young Neil: He punched the highlights out of her hair!
...
Stacey Pilgrim: I mean, did you really see a future with this girl?
Scott Pilgrim: Like... with jetpacks?
...
Knives Chau: [to Ramona] Steal my boyfriend, taste my steel!
...
Gideon Gordon Graves: You made me swallow my gum! That's going to be in my digestive tract for seven years!
