Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir #121: The Shawshank redemption

Genre: Drama/Drame

Annee/Year: 1994

Format: DVD

The Shawshank redemption. This is considered by many as one of the top films of the 1990's. First reaction is that this movie is still fresh as it was in '94; and it will certainly be in 20 more years.

The film was directed by Frank Darabont and based on a short story from Stephen King himself. NO IT IS NOT a HORROR movie...Now that this is cleared this duo of Darabont and King was very successfull on many occasion: The Mist (see review #100), the Green mile. Darabont is also directing the new movie hit series "The walking dead" which is relaly taking off.

This film is about friendship between two inmates in the period after the 2nd world war, and their stay in this prison named Shawshank. Tim Robbins plays the role of Andy Dufresne who is a banker who is put inside for the murder of his wife but he is not guilty. Morgan Freeman plays the role of a con artists put in jail for a long time. The acting is worthy of the best caliber and the relationship between the two friends is especially credible. Off course they battle against other nasty inmates and prison guards and director which are often worst than hte prisoners. It is a story of good versus evil and the persistance of man of strong will against the worst odds. A beautiful and very moving story for everyone. If holywood could produce such movies more often we would be really well served.

The Shawshank redemption.

Great quotes:

Warden Samuel Norton: I believe in two things: discipline and the Bible. Here you'll receive both. Put your trust in the Lord; your ass belongs to me. Welcome to Shawshank.
...
Red: Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.
...
Andy Dufresne: That's the beauty of music. They can't get that from you... Haven't you ever felt that way about music?
Red: I played a mean harmonica as a younger man. Lost interest in it though. Didn't make much sense in here.
Andy Dufresne: Here's where it makes the most sense. You need it so you don't forget.
Red: Forget?
Andy Dufresne: Forget that... there are places in this world that aren't made out of stone. That there's something inside... that they can't get to, that they can't touch. That's yours.
Red: What're you talking about?
Andy Dufresne: Hope.
...
Red: These walls are funny. First you hate 'em, then you get used to 'em. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them. That's institutionalized.
Heywood: Shit. I could never get like that. Prisoner: Oh yeah? Say that when you been here as long as Brooks has.
Red: Goddamn right. They send you here for life, and that's exactly what they take. The part that counts, anyway.
...
Red: [narrating] I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.
...
1967 Parole Hearings Man: Ellis Boyd Redding, your files say you've served 40 years of a life sentence. Do you feel you've been rehabilitated?
Red: Rehabilitated? Well, now let me see. You know, I don't have any idea what that means.
1967 Parole Hearings Man: Well, it means that you're ready to rejoin society...
Red: I know what *you* think it means, sonny. To me it's just a made up word. A politician's word, so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie, and have a job. What do you really want to know? Am I sorry for what I did?
1967 Parole Hearings Man: Well, are you?
Red: There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because I'm in here, or because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him. I want to try and talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone and this old man is all that's left. I got to live with that. Rehabilitated? It's just a bullshit word. So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a shit.
...
Andy Dufresne: If they ever try to trace any of those accounts, they're gonna end up chasing a figment of my imagination. Red: Well, I'll be damned. Did I say you were good? Shit, you're a Rembrandt! Andy Dufresne: Yeah. The funny thing is - on the outside, I was an honest man, straight as an arrow. I had to come to prison to be a crook.
...
Andy Dufresne: You know what the Mexicans say about the Pacific?
Red: No.
Andy Dufresne: They say it has no memory. That's where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory.

Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir #120: Night of the Demons

Genre: Horror/Horreur

Annee/Year: 2009

Format: DVD

Night of the demons. This is the second movie from Adam Gierasch a young director dedicated to horror flicks and whose first movie was Autopsy. night of the demons is a remake from the successfull but not widely known 1988 movie of the same name; which had two sequels.

The story is the same: a group of adolescent decide to make a Halloween party in a house with a dark history of strange murders. Nice classic recipe. Off course the ancient demons posses the kids one by one until the tragic end. Lots of tension, special effects and scens with lots of sexual tension. This movie is now a classic staple for horror enthusiasts. If you are a fan of the genre you have to see this movie. For others, it is good entertainement but gory and without much actor prowess & contents. The score however was really good; it god me digging for my old Concrete Blonde album which had been dormant for at least 10 years. Thanks Night of the demons I had fun.

Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir #119: Robin hood

Genre: Action/Historical/Historique

Annee/Year: 2010

Format: Blu Ray

Robin Hood. Well Robin hood is a bit like Batman: everything they reboot the franchise they need to find strong new ways to sell us the package. This time i was sold from the start since this iteration of the Robin Hood was directed by none other than Ridley Scott (also from Ridley: Alien, Blad Runner, Gladiator, Black Hawk down and many other first choice movies).

The movie casts a star crew as well with Russel Crow in lead role along with Kate Blanchet as lady Marion, also to note the participation of Max Von Sydow and William Hurt wo play strong performances as well as Kevin Durand, Mark Addy and Mark Strong who also hold memorable roles. First rate cast and play.

The story is a really interesting twist in itself as it does not take place in the usual Robin vs Sherif of Nottingham setting but instead takes a step back and follows the story from the end of the crusades with an english army returning home without as much faith as they had set out with. Very nice twist. Ridley also uses very well the setting of the French/English wars of the middle ages to set the story more precisely and with much more interest historically. This is the first Robin hood which gave me a sense that it be;onged in history (maybe even taught me something about htis period). Tip of the hat to Ridley and Brian Helgeland the screenwriter.

So we have a great direction, spectacular visuals, good story, great actors and play. Do we have a homerun? Well not really... partially disapointed wit the final result. Althoug all the pieces were there ;the whole does not add up unfortunately. I viewed the director's cut and that may part of the problem as i see this more a pace of the editing issue. The film has some lengths and is actually quite long (140mins vs 156mins for the director's cut). I dont mind longer movies but they need to keep your interest all the way. Somewhere after the first third i started wondering where we were going...
Definitely an entertaining movie worth watching but not a second Gladiator success for the Crowe/Scott team.

Robin Hood.

Great quotes:

Friar Tuck: So why do they call you 'Little John'?
Little John: What are you tryin' to get at? I'm proportionate!
...
Robin Longstride: If you're building for the future, you need to keep your foundations strong, laws of the land enslave the people to a king who demands loyalty but offers nothing in return, I've been to the South of France, Palestine and back, you build a kingdom the same way you build a cathedral from the ground up!
...
Marion Loxley: Greenwood became the outlaw's friend, orphan boys welcome, there was no tax, no tides, no rich, no poor, fair trades at the table, many wrongs to be righted in the country of King John, watch over us Walter.
...
Prince John: Henceforth I declare you to be an outlaw.

Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir #118: Splice

Genre: Sci-fi/Science-Fiction

Annee/Year: 2009

Format: Blu-Ray

Splice. A winner on many levels. This is a movie by Director Vincenzo Natali a director with few movies under his belt but probably a much greater potential. He also directed Cube (1997) a movie which is now on my list of films to watch. The movie Splice was shot and mainly produced in Canada which is a strong sign for our film industry as this has got all the parts of a big holywood blockbuster.

The film main actors are a team (couple) of scientist played by Sara Polley and Adrien Brody. Adrien is one of these actors who has the wind blowing in his diretion these days. After playing in King kong and Shamalayan's The Village, he played recently a lead role with Dario Argento in the movie Giallo but mainly he was the main character in the last Predators movie. He will be playing soon in the soon to be released movie The Experiment which i am convinced will be memorable(based on a true story). Polley played in ExistenZ from Cronenberg as well as Dawn of the dead, as well as Beowulf and grendel. Yes both of them kicked ass in these roles. Note also here the participation of David Hewlett which many will remember from his Stargate Atlantis days. The special effects are truky spectacular on this movie by the way.

The story written in part by V Natali relates the story of the couple/scientists who are experts in their field of genetic engineering and who study the splicing of genes from different species. They manage to produce a new chimera species which they plan to use to produce new proteins which can solve some of the world's problems and assure cash flow of their hosting company. The movie up to that point is an excellent platform to discuss the ethics of this type of research. But it takes a turn to bring us into a much darker area when our two scientists decide to splice human DNA into their recipe to get to the next level...and what a step it is.

I will not divulge more of this really captivating story but i will say that the movie does loose a lot of credibility when the scientists start breaking ALL the rules which normal sane scientist would self impose. Including having sex with your experiment...The last part of the movie becomes closer to a Stephen King novel but remains entertaining and exciting. In the end it turns very far away from a movie which you can use to reflect on etichs and becomes more of a modern day Frankeinstein. Definitely an intense and captivating movie but perhaps not for everyone. Definitely 16 and above.
Note that the blu ray is very good quality transfer.

Great quotes:

Clive Nicoli: Why the fuck did you make her in the first place? Huh? For the betterment of mankind? You never wanted a normal child because you were afraid of losing control.
...
Elsa Kast: [crying] What do you want? What do you want?
Dren: Inside... you...

Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir #117: Pet Semetary

Genre: Horror/Horreur

Annee/Year: 1989

Format: DVD

Pet Semetary. This is a DVD i had been wanting to see again for a while. The movie is based on the novel from Stephen King the master of horror. In general, King's books dont translate well to movie format. I have to say this is not the case here as in last movie from King i reviewed (review #100 The mist) excellent result as a movie. This movie from director, Mary lambert who also did part 2 of the same movie as well as directed many famous music videos. Although it is now 21years old it is still effective as a solid horror movie.

With a good casting including Dale Midkiff as Dr Creed the main protagonist, Fred Gwynne as his front neighbor (he played Frankeinstein in the 60's Munsters) and Denise Crosby (worshipped by trekkies for her role as Tasha Yar) we should not forget the excellent work done by the two Creed kids played by Miko Hugues and Blaze Berdhal. The actor play is fairly good but the script and story make it fly. The special effects are now a bit dated but were excellent fo the time and definitely set a creepy mood for the film. An entertaining movie with a moral to boot. The film relates the story of a family moving to a new house in the country side which is adjacent to a pet cemetary. The trick is that behind it lies an old indian graveyard which has the power to bring back from the dead any creature buried there. The catch is that they come back with a different attitude than when they left. A series of murders ensues misuse of the powers of this graveyard... whoooo. Still creeps me out after all these years. This is a truly scary movie which really trasnlates properly the moods of the Stephen King novels. Gotta see once at least.

Great quotes:

Jud Crandall: It's that damn road!
...
Jud Crandall: [to Louis] It's your cat now.
...
Louis Creed: Has anyone ever buried a person up there?
Jud Crandall: Christ on his throne no. Who ever would?
...
[Talking on the phone] Gage: First I play with Judd, then Mommy came, and I play with Mommy. We play Daddy! We had a awfully good time! Now, I want to play with YOU!
Louis Creed: What did you do?
Gage: HE HA!
Louis Creed: What did you do?
...
Victor Pascow: I'm sorry Louis! I'm so sorry, but don't make it worse! DON'T!
Louis Creed: I waited too long with Gage, but with Rachel! It will work this time, because she just died, SHE JUST DIED A LITTLE WHILE AGO!

Genre: Comedy/Comedie

Annee/Year: 1988

Format: DVD

Elvira, mistress of the dark. Finally another VHS i can get rid of. Got the DVD version of this old 80's classic. For those too young or not familiar with the character Elvira (played by actress Cassandra Peterson a red head...) let us describe her as one of the early goth figure with a love of B movies, lots of cleavage, big assets as well as an acid tongue to criticize very freely. She is characterized by her role as the host of late night cheap flick TV shows.

This movie by director James Signorelli (from Saaturday Night Live movies fame), relates a full blown comedy about the impact this radical Goth lady has on a small Massachuset town's folk. many good actors participate to this movie such as William Morgan Sheppard, Jeff Conaway from Babylon 5 fame and Edie McClurg from Ferris Bueler (yes the secretary of the school director). Lots of laugh and witty one liners characterize this script. A good time for all.

Great quotes:

Elvira: Bloody Mary.
Bartender: No hard liquor served past eight o'clock. Do you want a virgin?
Elvira: Maybe, but, ah... I'll have a couple of drinks first.
...
Elvira: My name's Elvira but you can call me 'tonight'.
...
[Elvira is late for the reading of her aunt's will]
Elvira: Hey guys! Sorry I'm late, but then, so is my aunt.
...
Elvira: Revenge is better than Christmas.
...
Bob Redding: How's your head?
Elvira: I haven't had any complaints yet.
...
Mrs. Meeker: Ok, but I want payment up front. I know what you heavy metal weirdos do to hotel rooms. I read all about it in the Star.
...
Earl Hooter: The name's Earl, but the ladies back home call me Longhorn, maybe you can guess why. Elvira: Gee, I dont know, does it have anything to do with your breath?

Genre: Horror/Horreur

Annee/Year: 1989

Format: DVD

A nightmare on Elm street 5: the dream child. This is the 5th movie in the franchise of 6 total. This film is not the worst of the series. Robert Englund playing Freddy is kiskcing ass in this movie as was at that stage truly into the role. The production quality for the movie was quite high for the time (still in the eighties) and the producers did not hesitate to play with interesting more complex scenes and soecial effects for the movie. The story brings back Freddy through a series of day time dreams which the main character is forced into. Through that she discovers the roots of Freddy's conception which is that his mother was a nun who was raped in an insane asylum. Alice, the main character is played by actress Lisa Wilcox, also is also pregrant at that point eventually figures out that Freddy is reaching back into our world through her child to be born. I will not spoil the end. If you are a fan of this franchise this will be a must and not one of the worst Freddy's out there.

A nightmare on Elm street 5: the dream child.

Amanda Krueger: Now, Jacob. Unleash the power he has given you.
Jacob: [looking back at Freddy after he sees that he has fallen into Amanda's trap] School's out, Krueger.

Genre: Horror/Horreur

Annee/Year: 2008

Format: DVD

Midnight Movie. This is a low budget B movie which redeems istself with an interesting plot. The director Jack Messit's only film to date is not a complete loss and does show some interest. The plot holds your interest and makes this more than a standard slasher. The crux of the story is a serial killers who comes back after 20years through the presentation of a film he realised. A small town cinema screens his film at midnight and the killer manages to break from film to reality to attack the patrons of the theater. Wildly entertaining. This movies casts one chick from the series Heroes who is not even mentioned in the credits. Makes for a good movie nioght of slasher film.

Great quotes:

Samantha: If you get turned on by this, we're breaking up.

Movies recommended or seen lately... les films a voir #113: Paranormal Activity

Genre: Horror/Horreur

Annee/Year: 2007

Format: Blu Ray

Paranormal activity. This is a movie with a really interesting story. Made with a super slim budget
it was released directly to DVD without having any distributor. Once people saw the movie, it became viral and started spreading until it became a phenomenon. At that moment a bigger studio acquired the rights and started doing a proper distribution pulling the DVDs out of market. The movie became an big success in the theaters and until it was published on DVD/Blu Ray.

This movies success has helped to revitalize the genre in the last years and has proven once again that limited budgets does not mean 2nd rate movie.

The story is told in a format similar to Blair witch project with a hand held home camera. It tells the tale of a young couple struggling with the signs of demonic visits in their home. The signs become stronger as the story progresses until the hit ending. The actors and director are unknowns and this marks the beginning of successfull careers. Remember the name Oren Peli as he is director and writter of this film. By now the 2nd iteration (actually a prequel) of Paranormal Activity is in theatres already. This movie is so simple it is funny but yet retains all it's effectiveness. It may appear a bit slow at times, but the climax is well delivered. I admit having chills in the final scene which is more than i can say for many other movies of the genre. Gotta see for everyone, but you will remember this movie for a long time.

Great quotes:

Micah: Well, basically it could be two things: it could be a ghost... [mock whisper]
Micah: or it could be a demon.
Katie: Dr. Fredrichs said that it wasn't a ghost.
Micah: Well, I've been going by the evidence and I'm doin' my research and I'm going to find out what it is.
Katie: Well, whatever it is that's following me, it doesn't feel... it doesn't feel human. It feels like it's... it feels like a monster. I mean like, it wants to hurt me.
Micah: Well that sounds like, actually like a demon.
Katie: Yeah, that's what he said.
Micah: Well, 'cause ghosts are spirits of human beings.
Katie: Yeah, it's definitely not human.
Micah: Then maybe you're right, which is bad 'cause demons suck.
...
Katie: I feel it. I feel it breathing on me.

Katie: It's getting worse.

Annee/Year: 1970

Format: DVD

Tora! Tora! Tora! Most people are familiar with the war movie "Pearl Harbour" some love it for it's great special effects and others hate it for using this important storyline to get too personnal and become a love story. My opnion is that the most recent movie is quite entertaining and fun to watch. But that is not the topic today; we are here talking about the original movie on the same incident. Tora! X3 is a more serious movie from another era. The cinematography is great with lots of efforts of production for 1970. Yes the effects are more limited but there is no mistaking this as a great deployment movie. The soundtrack is excellent for the 70's and reminds me a lot of the Planet of the Apes first movie theme.

The story is following the historical facts and there is no main actor such as in "Pear Harbour". The heroes of the story are all the commanders and admirals who took part of this event. The movie is a bit harsh as it feels like a jury deliberation. It does give you a good felling about the events around this historical day while remaining highly entertaining. The movie is 40 years old this year but has aged relatively well and is still pleasant to watch. The cast is solid and the script as well. Gotta see for war movie buffs.

Great quotes:

[Halsey has been ordered to take his Task Force to Wake Island to deliver a squadron of fighters] Admiral Halsey: Kim, level with me. I want a clear directive... If I run into a Jap ship, what action do I take?
Admiral Kimmel: Use your common sense.
Admiral Halsey: That's the best damn order I ever had. [Halsey walks away, then turns around]
Admiral Halsey: If I see so much as a sampan near it, I'll blow it out of the water.
...
Telephone conversation from the radar station to the Information Center] Private George E. Elliott: Sir, this is Private Elliott at Opana Point. There's a large formation of planes coming in from the north - 140 miles, 3 degrees east.

Lieutnenant Kermit A. Tyler: Yeah? Well... Don't worry about it.

...
Lieutenant Kaminsky: [to Captain John Earle, who demanded confirmation of the attack before doing anything] You wanted confirmation, Captain? Take a look! There's your confirmation!
[Earle, horrified, looks out and sees several ships in flames]
...
Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto: I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.
